In December 2017 parts of Melbourne Australia had a major hail event that caused damage to tens of thousands of cars. My family had 3 cars badly damaged.

My son’s car sustained over 200 hail dents and when he took it to be assessed the Suncorp accused him of doing it himself. They had an expert assessor write a report that said he had hit his car with a rounded hammer! Both him and I were interview by an insurance fraud investigator. Interestingly after he stopped recording I asked him how many of these cases he handles and he said for this event alone hundreds.

I then asked him how many of the people he speaks to does he think are honesty people being treated unfairly by Suncorp. His answer... 75%. My next question was how many take it further and he said only about 25% because people can’t afford to fight the insurance companies and the Financial Ombudsman rarely finds in favour of the insured party.

He said “off the record” thousands of people are ripped off because they can’t afford to fight it or withdraw their claim because they don’t want to end up with a black mark against their name because they will never get insurance anywhere else. That’s what’s happened to my son.

He has had to withdraw his claim and now has a cornyhat will cost about $10k to fix, no money to fix it, and they still have the $2k insurance premium he paid. So unfair that insurance companies can get away with this!
